Energy & Power

Energy is one of Liberia’s biggest development constraints and one of the strongest business opportunities. Access remains limited nationally and much lower in rural communities. The current direction is grid expansion, off-grid solar, mini-grids, renewable energy, utility reform, and battery-backed systems for homes and businesses.

Current Status and Trends

·       The National Energy Compact for Liberia aims to accelerate electricity access through grid and off-grid options, with a target of connecting about 100,000 households per year.

·       The compact targets a national access rate of 75 percent by 2030 and commits to increasing renewable energy from about 67 percent to 75 percent.

·       The compact identifies private-capital opportunities for utility-scale solar, decentralized renewable energy, and clean cooking.

·       Power reliability remains a major issue for businesses, especially clinics, shops, schools, cold storage, hotels, and offices.

·       Solar adoption is growing because it solves lighting, phone charging, refrigeration, security, and business-continuity problems without waiting for the national grid.

Why This Sector Matters for Investors

·       Solar is a practical low-to-medium-cost entry point for NLPSG because products can be imported, retailed, bundled, installed, and financed in phases.

·       High-demand products include solar street lights, flood lights, solar lamps, home kits, batteries, inverters, charge controllers, solar water pumps, solar freezers, and solar security cameras.

·       Business customers are likely to buy higher-value systems: shops, clinics, event halls, guesthouses, schools, farms, warehouses, and churches.

·       Rural communities need affordable lighting, water pumping, phone charging, and cold storage.

Practical Business Opportunities for NLPSG

·       Retail solar store: lamps, street lights, home kits, cables, controllers, batteries, and bulbs.

·       Installation services: sell the product with installation, maintenance, and warranty.

·       Payment-plan model: customers make deposits and monthly payments for solar home kits or business backup systems.

·       Solar + water packages: solar pump, water tank, PVC pipe, fittings, and installation.

·       Solar + security packages: solar flood lights, CCTV cameras, padlocks, metal gates, and installation.

NLPSG is positioning diaspora investors to participate in this sector through structured research, phased investment, local partnerships, and practical product or service development. Our goal is to move beyond discussion and identify profitable, responsible, and community-centered opportunities that create jobs, improve infrastructure, and increase Liberian participation in national development.

Source note: Liberia’s 2025 National Energy Compact states that the country aims to connect about 100,000 households per year, reach 75 percent electricity access by 2030, and raise renewable energy to 75 percent. The World Bank and African Development Bank’s Mission 300 effort supports energy-access expansion across Africa.
